Matt Doheny

Matt Doheny, 41, was raised in the north country, graduated from high school here and lives here.

His father, Richard, was a traveling salesman; his mom, Kay, stayed at home with Matt and his younger brother, Mark. She still lives in the Alexandria Bay home where the boys were raised.

Matt’s parents didn’t have a lot of money for college, so Matt paid for his undergraduate degree at Allegheny College with student loans. While at Allegheny, he made the school’s football and hockey teams and was elected student body president. After graduating in 1992, he received a partial scholarship from Cornell University’s law school. He earned his law degree in 1995.

Matt practiced law in Syracuse after college, but decided that path wasn’t for him. He jumped into the business world, working his way up from the bottom to become Deutsche Bank’s managing director for distressed assets. Matt managed more than 130 individuals. He helped purchase large troubled companies and restructure them so they could once again operate independently.

In 2008, Matt left Deutsche Bank to join Fintech Advisory, a money management firm. He left Fintech in 2010 to start his own company, North Country Capital LLC. The company lends start-up funds to entrepreneurs who don’t have access to traditional funding streams. It also provides working capital to existing businesses to help them grow.

Matt also uses his expertise in turnarounds and restructuring by sitting on the boards of two national companies, BridgeStreet and YRC Worldwide.

Locally, Matt teaches at Clarkson University and Jefferson Community College. He is a Flower Memorial Library trustee, and a member of the Elks, the Watertown Noon Rotary Club and the North Side Improvement League.

In 2010, Matt was the Republican and Independence parties’ candidate in New York’s 23rd Congressional District. He lost the general election by 1,995 votes – one of the ten closest House races that year – in a three-way race. Matt returns this year, looking to secure the Republican, Independence and Conservative parties’ endorsements and to return the seat to Republican hands.
