Republicans in State Senate Push to Double New York's Charter Schools

Today Senate Republicans promised to work with Senate Democrats to pass much needed legislation that would double the number of charter schools in New York State.   While many Democrats in the Senate are expected to oppose the bill because of opposition by the NYSUT and its labor allies, Republicans refuse to cave, understanding the importance of charter school reform.

It appears the bill will only be able to pass with a significant number of GOP senators voting in favor of it. Iannuzzi said he will make sure NYSUT members know the names of “every senator – both Democrats and Republicans” who vote “yes” when the union holds its endorsement conference this summer.

From The Knickerbocker, May 3, 2010:

Republicans in the state senate today vowed to provide the necessary votes to more than double the number of charter schools in New York.

"We'll be the responsibility party to make sure that happens," said senate GOP spokesman [John] Mcardle.
